Best Exotic Retreat Locations

Feeling adventurous? While often the word “retreat” evokes a feeling of rest and relaxation, a retreat can be both that and adventurous! For the more daring souls, here is a list of adventurous and  exotic retreat locations.

Cuba – Scuba diving in a cave? Sounds perfect! Cuba is home to many caves, waterfalls, and reefs for scuba diving. In fact, Cuba has the second largest reef in the world behind the Australian Great Barrier reef, making it the perfect destination for underwater exploration. It is also native to roughly 100 species of sharks, so you are sure to have an exciting underwater adventure.

Costa Rica – Even if you have zip-lined before, it’s unlikely that past experiences compare to zip-lining in Costa Rica. The views are absolutely stunning and adrenaline-seekers are sure to find a thrill zooming above the trees. The wildlife is also sure to impress, with exotic birds, monkeys, and dolphin sightings. Speaking of the ocean, the waves in Costa Rica attract serious surfers. There are 5 active volcanoes to explore in Costa Rica, as well. We saved the best for last- waterfall rappelling!

GuatemalaGuatemala has over 30 volcanos, the most daring of all being Acatenango. This volcano is 13,044 ft/3,976m above sea level and there is an overnight tour available. You can sleep above the clouds on the sloping volcano, catching views of nearby volcanoes. Imagine waking up to breathtaking views of Guatemala before descending back to the city. You can also find black sand beaches along the coast, home to whales, sea turtles, and other tropical wildlife.

Sri Lanka – Known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is famous for its rich biodiversity and stunning natural wonders like the Sigiriya Fortress. The Sigiriya rock plateau towers up to 200 meters high, and is tagged as the “Eighth Wonder of the World”. If you’re an animal lover, then their Yala National Park with over 700 animal species would definitely not disappoint. It has the world’s highest concentrations of leopards; and, has an impressive amount of bird species like the Sri Lankan Spurfowl, Ceylon Jungle Fowl, and Blue-capped Bulbul. Sri Lanka is also a famous surfing and beach destination in Asia, presenting several options all year round.

Thailand – Return to your natural roots and go jungle trekking. You may spot a tiger, clouded leopard, common treeshrew, binturong, agile gibbon, sun bear or asian elephant. If you miss an elephant in the wild, try the Chiang Mai elephant sanctuary which is home to many rescued elephants. Thailand also has great spots for mountain biking, white water rafting, and beautiful caves for exploring.

Bali – To learn about Bali’s early rituals and traditions, check out Trunyan. One of the most fascinating rituals in Bali may be the burial ground, where deceased villagers were laid around a tree, and visitors can still view today. Experience a cultural ritual by attending a kecak trace ceremony. For foodie travelers, go rice field trekking or explore a coffee farm. For a wildlife experience, hike through a monkey forest, visit the butterfly park, or visit the turtle breeding sanctuary.
